Air Pollution Inside Your Home

Air pollution, is one of the many top environmental concerns in our world today. Indoor air pollution is another major concerns. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air pollution levels can be up to five times higher than pollution levels outside. A higher percentage of Americans spend more time inside then outside. Four commonly known indoor air pollutants are animal dander, second-hand tobacco smoke, pollen and mold.

Second-hand tobacco smoke is one of the smallest allergen particles and is linked to many health problems including asthma. Secondhand smoke is a toxic by-product of smoking tobacco, which affects anyone who is exposed to it.

Animal dander is loose skin cells (like dandruff) flakes shed by animals. Animal dander can cause asthmatic and allergic reactions in people who are allergic to them. These skin cells, contain secretions from glands, which float through the air where people may breathe them in.

Pollen is created by plant life. Trees, flowers and other plant life release particles into the air. Each time a door or window is opened, millions of pollen particles enter the home. Most allergy sufferers are allergic to one or more types of pollen.

Molds produce tiny spores to reproduce. Mold spores move through the indoor and outdoor air continually. Mold can be found where there is a supply of water or where it is warm and humid. The shower, kitchen and basement are perfect places for these spores to grow.
